The Mayland Mil was
situated on Steeple Road. This grade-II listed
pub is now used as
an Indian restaurant.

Sad to see that another pub has fallen to
the relentless tidal change in the British way of life.
I remember this pub well as a Southminster
boy. It was where I worked at weekends as a silver service waiter in
the restaurant whilst still at school in the sixth form circa 1976. In
fact I worked all day on a dairy farm and all night in the
restaurant. ( I had to scrub my hands many times before work you will
understand) ;-)
The licencee at the time was a guy called
Roy Pullinger as I recall.
It was also at about the same time (1979)
a haunt on Sunday nights for all the soul, jazz/funk devotees in the
area at the time who had a guy called Gaff Hooper who DJ'ed the latest
obscure releases at one end of the bar. I remember it well and playing the latest
pub video game "Asteroids" endlessly. Oh happy days but long gone now.

Would like to know if Gavin Price or any other customer knows where Roy
& Jackie Pullinger went after leaving the Mayland as I would like to
get in contact with Jackie as she was an old school friend in the 1950s
& 1960s, so if any one knows please contact me or this site. |
