Pretty Lady

I regularly drive past the very much extended and modernised
building which used to be The Pretty Lady at Ranks `Green. In 1969 I was a
college student in Chelmsford and three friends and I used to spend much of
our time searching out remote pubs where we could escape the drudgery of
college work. We found the Pretty Lady by chance, whilst looking for another
pub nearby, The Compasses. Inside the Pretty lady was just like a 1930s
house, complete with heavy polished furniture and a sofa. Beer was ordered
with the landlady who then disappeared from the public room and shortly
returned with a tray of beers. The beer was either Ridleys or Grays, I think
Ridleys from Felsted. And was not pumped or gassed in any way. We were all
18 and could legally drink alcohol but we were never challenged although two
of us looked pretty young. |

Reading the first review brought it
back to me, like sitting in someone’s front room! Flat beer, straight out of
the wood. I used to visit the pub in the early seventies when I was courting
a girl who lived nearby, haven’t thought about the place for many years but
am still married to the girl! |
