The Sportsman

The Sportsman was situated at 100 Constable Way. This pub was later known as The Osprey, then The Renown and is now used as a learning centre.

I remember this pub very well in the 1970s. My Father was a musician and played there 3 nights a week for some while. The pub was very modern in design (for its day) and I understood had been conceived as a club (disco) but before opening was repurposed as a pub. I remember the landlord and landlady just as 'Dave and Olive'. They moved from there to the 'Owl and the Pussycat' at Basildon, which suited their style better.
