The Ship was situated on Dock Road.
This pub was established in around
1890 and survived in
use until
at least 1937, probably later. Old signage for ‘Toby
Stout’ shows that it was once a
Charrington’s Brewery house. The premises are now used as
a post office and occupied by other retail users. |

This pub was reported in the Sun newspaper as the roughest pub in England at
the end of 1980s. This caused a lot of other pubs to issue threats that they
would come down and prove who were the toughest. Shortly afterwards the Ship
closed for refurbishments and never opened again. I used to live near there
and would occasionally drink in it. I can say it was a very rough pub with
fights guaranteed every night, usually with sailors who had disembarked at
Tilbury docks. |
