The Maypole was situated on Messing Road. This pub is now used as a Chinese restaurant.
I'm very proud to say that members of my family used to stay at the rear of the Maypole Inn around the turn of the 20th Century. Their name was Thomas Holmes and family, who i believe worked on the fruit farm. I know they had at least one Gypsy wagon, and were trusted well enough to be invited to park up and stay behind the pub. They also stayed at another pub a few miles away at time, the name slips my mind atm, possibly The Swan?
