The Red Lion Hotel was situated
at 9 South Street. This pub is now used as a Chinese restaurant.

During WW 11, I and 3-4 other USAF guys were
billeted at the Red Lion, then under the proprietorship of Jack Gill. We
were treated as family by Jack, his wife, and daughters Doreen and Winnie.
Jack got his scotch ration early in the month, and we had it all drunk up by
the fifth. This was for 2-3 months, early 1944, beautiful little village. My
wife and I, she a former WAAF, returned for a visit in 1995, during our 50th
anniversary trip to England. Sadly, no Jack Gill, no lovely wife, no
beautiful daughters. We USAF guys operated a DF station, tracking fighter
planes of the 9th Air Force. Had a signal truck in one of the meadows,
surrounded by sheep. A group of RAF guys, with similar duties, shared the
same area. Got chummy with them at day's end, at the Red Lion. |
