building details: |
House, formerly used as public
house. Circa 1600 with late C19 and mid-C20 alterations and additions. Part
timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill on tall limestone
rubble base, and part limestone rubble; thatched roof with brick stack at
centre and east end of ridge. Four framed bays aligned east/west including
narrow cross-passage bay (second from east end) and with large chimney
backing onto passage. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: two and
three panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight solid upper corner
braces, no roof trusses visible externally. South front elevation: irregular
fenestration with three 2-light casements, a 3-light casement and a
single-light casement on the ground floor, and a square landing light and
two eyebrow dormers, one with a pair of 2-light casements and the other with
a 4-light casement. Main entrance has a ledged and battened door with a
wrought iron single bracket above. Attic light in left gable end. There is a
C19 single-bay limestone rubble addition at the right gable end. It was
built as a stable but is now part of the house and has a C20 bay window and
door in the front elevation. Also C19 single-storey kitchen addition at
rear. The framing of the two easternmost bays suggest they are earlier in
date. Interior: framing largely intact including inter- mediate collar and
tie-beam roof trusses. Chamfered cross-beamed ceiling in central ground
floor room with large fireplace. Ogee stop-chamfered main ceiling beams in
former parlour in west bay. Elm winder staircase to rear of cross passage. |
