White Swan

The White Swan was situated at 161 North Lane.
I lived in North Lane Aldershot and Mum and Dad socialised at the White Swan Pub . My Dad played an accordian there in the sixties he also worked there at some point . The landlords son was a mate of mine when I was at junior (infant) school . I can remember standing in the bar as a kid whilst all the "Dad's" had a pint or two before the Pub outing to Southsea. I tasted a sip of Beer there and hated it, I remember the sunlight beaming through the window .The coach was then loaded up with bottles of Watneys, mums dads and kids and we headed over the South downs in the direction of Pompey !
When I stopped working my paper round I worked in the pub "bottling up" i.e. filling the shelves, labels to the front . The owner at that time was called Ernie he laid a trap for all his employees by leaving a £5 note for them to check if they were honest or not , I spied him picking one up (my trap I'd guess) and said "you're lucky finding that".
I also bought 45 rpm records in town for the juke box , he said that he was pleased with my choice until one day I bought a Gary Glitter record that had been re-released and the original was still on the juke box . In those days the White Swan was the hub of North town (along with the other two pubs !) and everybody knew everybody there was a community sadly gone these days . The pub's still there as a building but it's use and future are uncertain.
