The Portland

The Portland was situated on Portland
Street. This was a Gales (now Fullers) pub with HSB, BBB and Light Mild on
electric pump. Early shots around 1900 show this as a nice Victorian
building, but it became a 1960's 'Thunderbirds' style boozer that Gales
seemed to like. Another Fareham pub with a 'reputation'. It has now been
demolished to make way for car parking and the whole street no longer exists. |

As far I remember the landlord just had to glance at you,
and if he didn't like the look of you, he would immediately bar you. I
came in with some locals so was accepted. His wife was French and
she had some money and property in France so he wasn't really bothered
in making that much money. |
