Rising Sun

The Rising Sun was situated on the corner of
Mill Lane and Gosport Road. In 1907 the licensee was Albert Hamper. Five
years later Albert’s sister in law Julia Filleul, nee White, became the
licensee until 1914 when the name on the licence was changed to her
husband’s. The license reverted to Julia later that year. Julia was John
White’s Aunt and John often talked about staying at the pub with his mother
while his father was away in the navy. He could remember being caught
drinking beer from the drip trays. When his father, also called John, heard
that his wife had been serving behind the bar he decided that he didn’t like
her serving the men and put a stop to it. |

I used to drink a Mackeson at
lunchtime 11:45- 12:30 weekdays in the lounge bar. It was always empty.
I liked the solitude away from my job half a mile south at the Ultra TV
factory. The pub had a turret style appearance. Unusual and unique.
Shame it was destroyed. |
