The Fir Tree was situated at 299 Lynchford Road, close to North
Camp station and the Old Ford pub. Due to its proximity to the station and
nearby barracks the pub was popular with soldiers and opened in 1862. The
first landlord is reported to be Mr. L. Monoghan and he announced in the
local press that he had obtained a wines and spirits license and could sell
a wide variety of beers. The Fir Tree was reputed to have been used as a
ticket office for the horse drawn tram service that ran from North Camp
station to Farnborough mainline station via North Camp village. Part of the
pub's car park was removed to make way for the then new A331 Blackwater
valley road in the early 1990s and the pub eventually closed in the late
1990s. The pub building still exists and is now part of a builder supply
merchants. |

I used to go there regularly in the early 1980s when I served
in the Army at the old Mons barracks. The landlord in those days was a chap
called Tonym a big fellow with ginger hair; his wife used to serve trout and
chips and great sausage butties. If I remember right he was ex RAF. A great
pub always full of life but it was very small. |

Remember it well from my time with the
Duke of Boots 75 / 76 and the landlord described fitted my memory of a big
ginger behind the bar , we kind of took the place over as the unofficial
Dukes band club, far too many drunken nights playing spoof and as long as we
managed to get the key in the ignition then we were sober enough to drive
home, Salananca Park opposite the polixe station.
Also remember drunken afternoons horse shoe tossing in the back garden, not
much success due to spoof, hey ho ! mis spent youth 1976 - blazing hot then
we all shipped out to Minden and new watering holes to be discovered. |
