As a child, in the 1950s, I travelled with my family from Cornwall to stay with my father's parents in Fleet in Hampshire.
We travelled by Royal Blue Coach via the A30, stopping at various inns en route - no motorways and service stations in those days! Our final stop was at the Swan Inn, Hartley Whitney, where we were met by my uncle who then drove us to my grandparents' house in Fleet. The coach continued to its final destination in London, perhaps Victoria?
As a young child, I do not remember going into the inn but spoke to someone who had similar recollections of stopping there on the Royal Blue. They said the inn was renowned for the wonderful teas provided by the host for coach travellers.
It was a long and tiring journey from Cornwall in those days and my only recollection is the sight and smell of pine trees surrounding the area and, of course, the relief that the journey was almost at an end.
