The Wellesley Arms was once a stop for coaches from London to Exeter. It closed c1840 when the railway reached Basingstoke.

Major General Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsony, brother of Lady Caroline Lamb, died suddenly here, on January 11th 1837. H was distinguished in the Peninsular war and at Waterloo where received several serious wounds.
