The Blue Anchor was situated on Ramshill.
This Tamplins pub was sold to Friary in 1955 and closed in the 1980s. It is
now in
residential use. |

We lived here for six months in 1957 on long
leave from Tanganyika. |

This was with Friary Ales until 1978 when
Churcher’s College (local independent school) purchased the property and
turned it into three flats for staff. When the school stopped doing boarding
in 1998 the property became mostly derelict and was then put on the market
in 2000 when I purchased it on September 15th. I spent about 3 years
converting it into a family home, but was always aware of the pub link, as I
had been at the school in the seventies when it was sold to them. The rear
of the property is about 250 years old and the front is about 160 years old. |

My great great grandfather, Henry Kimber ran the
pub from c. 1868 to 1877 when he died there. His passing was dramatic in
that he fell out of his bedroom window late one night (He had the DTs) and
was discovered up in the early hours of the next morning by his daughter. He
died the following day. The inquest was held in the bar, and paints the
picture of life in the pub that evening. His wife, Harriet, continued to run
the pub for a few years. I have a copy of the newspaper report telling the
story of the inquest in great detail. I would love one day to visit the pub
and see where these things happened. I would also like to know who owned the
pub at that time, and how Henry was appointed. |
