The Spain Arms was situated at 1 The Spain. This
pub closed in the early 20th century and is now used as a bed & breakfast
establishment. |

My grandfather's uncle, Thomas Kimber was for a
few years the landlord up to 1892. It was a fairly rough pub. Thomas
landlord is in the local papers for an affray against the landlord of the
Bricklayers Arms. He was probably there about 6 years when the licence was
transferred to George Smart, who in turn lost it to Edwin Daughtrey half a
dozen years later. In 1903 Daughtrey's wife was in court for allowing
drunkenness on the premises. But in 1904 a man lodging at the pub was
murdered by a fellow resident, an Italian , following an argument. Daughtrey
promptly lost the licence to Arthur Shepherd. The murderer ran off and was
not apprehended till 1907, when the man, an Italian itinerant organ grinder
was caught in Manchester and returned to face trial. |
