The Clacton was known as one of the
roughest pubs in Portsmouth. I'm an entertainer and I played there one
night. I was told by the landlady that I'd done well, because I actually
lasted the whole evening, despite a LOT of heckling. I think I broke my
record for the fastest time I've ever packed my gear up and left a venue!
The police were the most regular visitors to the pub, which was so
notorious.
One urban legend claims that the fire which finally gutted the Clayton was
actually started by local residents, who wanted to make sure it never
reopened after the last landlord vacated it. |
