The George was situated at 30 High
Street. This pub was made famous by Lord Nelson, who had breakfast in the
hotel on the morning that he set sail for Trafalgar. The building was
destroyed by German bombs during World War Two. A nearby repositioned plaque
reads: 'Admiral Lord Nelson passed through this archway 14th September 1805
on his way to the seashore to embark for the last time to join his flagship
HMS Victory and take command of the British Fleet at the glorious Battle Of
Trafalgar'. |
