The Rose Of England was situated at 14-16 Spring
Street.
This pub was present by 1865 and rebuilt in 1989. Now used as a retail outlet - the old tiled name is hidden behind
the plywood facia board. |

It is now a cafe I believe. My mother
Lydia Boniface ran this pub with my help for four years, 1944 to 1948. It
sold beer only, drawn from the barrel – no wines or spirits. Used almost
entirely by the RN although the bookmakers of Portsmouth met every Monday
lunch time to “settle up”. There was a piano in the pub and once had the
great pleasure of an evenings playing by Stanley Black’s pianist. V J night
was well celebrated too I remember. For me – well I met my husband there and
we clocked up 68 years of marriage.

As a member of the RCN, I had the immense pleasure of
making quite a few port visits over the years to Pompey. The very first
place me and my mates would go for a pint when the brow was opened, was
to the Rose of E. Fred and Lottie ran the place back then and we always
felt so at home there. It is part of my fondest memories of my 21 years
in the Navy. |
