The Salutation was the “In Place” for bands in
the 1980’s When I first started playing live it was considered that only the
best local bands got to play at “The Sally”. The truth is that the landlord
at the time, Fred Hardyman, who’s brother was actually Johnny Briggs
(formerly Mike Baldwin in Corrie) would book any band that would agree to
play for 10% of the bar take. The first rock ‘n’ roll trio I ever fronted
was called “The Silhouettes” and featured myself, Ian McKay on guitar, Tony
Hinks on bass guitar and Jeff Snell on drums. We made up for our lack of
playing ability by putting everything we had into our performance and after
a few weeks of playing a regular spot on Tuesday nights we managed to earn
£100 to split between us. We were so proud of our achievement.
I still remember a few of the bands that were regulars at The Sally around
the same time and some had great names like “Deaf Boy Hug & The Hearing
Aids”, “No Fixed Abode” and the legendary local heavy rock band, “Truffle”.
I also played there a few times with 60’s band “Flipback”. “Accolade” were a
regular fixture on Sunday lunchtimes and their trumpet player is the mother
of my eldest daughter. I have many stories from back then which would
compare to the goings on in that other well known drinking establishment,
“The Queen Vic”. I would never find time to write them all here. Maybe an
autobiography is the answer. J
I moved away from Portsmouth in the 90’s and was very sad to see on my last
visit that The Sally had been closed down and converted into a branch of
“Age Concern”. I did wonder if that meant that all of us veteran musicians
could still make it our regular gig. Ha Ha |
