Abbey Hotel

The Abbey Hotel was situated at 11 Church Street. Formerly The Market Inn built about 1880 it replaced the previous Falcon Inn. Closed in the July, in September 2015 the local newspaper reported that the White Horse Hotel had purchased the Abbey and had a £500,000 refurbishment plan. Presumably it was temporarily closed for refurbishment but work that started in February 2018 has no external signs of advancement. Pub sold again in January 2020 and as of April part of the ground floor was being converted to a shop under permitted rights development and an application was granted in October 2020 to convert the rest to housing. The lintel that reads 'Courage & Co', probably dates from the early years of Courage's ownership of the Alton Brewery.
