The Railway View was situated at 13 Station
Road. This pub closed in the 1960s and is now in residential use. |

In 1962 The Railway View was the first pub I
bought myself a beer in. I was 15 years old at the time, I went in with a
friend also 15, we ordered 2 pints of Mild ( Strongs) straight from wooden
barrels at the rear of the bar. .The pub was right outside the brewery gate.
When asked if we were old enough to drink we both said we were 18. We sat
and drank our beers trying to be nonchalant. On finishing we were asked if
we wanted another we said no we had things to do. As we left the barman said
"Give my regards to Ivor" ( My Dad ) who was landlord of the Phoenix 200
yards down the road.As we walked back down Latimer Street Dad was stood at
the rear gate, " What have you been up to ? " "Nothing much" i replied,
"Havent been in a pub then?" "No" i replied, "Well thats alright then" and
he turned and walked away. It was then I knew I could do nothing in Romsey
without him finding out, drinking would have to be a lot further from home. |

I understand from my mother that the bunting in
the above photo was for the coronation of George IV, and the flags were hung
by my grandfather Mr. Porter. I believe it was a relative of his who held
the licence at the time. |

My Mum and Dad kept this pub about 1962. My husband and
myself lived with them, in fact my second child arrived there in 1967.
We moved out 3 months later. |

As a small boy living in Station Road, I was often sent
to the back entrance for lemonade, crisps etc. I went to school with Rob
Bassett who lived there and often went there to play on the swing in the
pub garden. |
