The New Inn was situated at 170 Bridge Road. This pub was known as The Bat & Ball from 1984.
Sarisbury Green gained a public house in 1870 along with the reading rooms. The former ‘New Inn’ public house is central to the group of buildings north of the main road. It has been converted to residential use in connection with a new housing development to the rear but its character has been retained and it continues to make an important contribution to the quality of this part of the conservation area; it has been indentified as a building of townscape interest. The building has certainly occupied the site in some form since about 1800 and has gradually been extended to its present size. It is an important reminder of the gradual development of the settlement and also of the importance of the turnpike road which must have provided passing trade. 1910. The New Inn has the wording Strong's Romsey's Ales on side wall and Luncheons and Teas Provided, Strong's Romsey's Ales and Wines, Spirits and Minerals on the front wall. It faced the green and occupied the site for at least 150 years. The New Inn was a Strong's pub and in 1969 - Strong's (Romsey) was taken over by Whitbread. Later the New Inn was taken over by Whitbreads Brewery and became the Bat and Ball.
The handmade, drawn from memory postcard, shown below was sent from South Africa in 1928 by my Great Uncle Tom, to The New Inn, “somewhere in the south of England.” The Publican of The New Inn was my Grandfather, William George Rainsley. The card is addressed to my Father, William, then aged about 10. In spite of all odds, this postcard made it to its final destination, in spite of numerous stops and re-directing. I can’t imagine that happening today.
