The New Inn was situated on Forge Road. This pub
closed in 2001 and is now used as a private house. |

60 years ago I stayed here along with my parents
for a weeks holiday in September 1963. My father worked in Chichester as a
railwayman, & knew the landlady who had run a pub in the City. When she
moved to Sleaford we were invited to stay.
Unlike usual holidays which where by train, here my father hired a car, he
wanted a Vauxhall Cresta which the Landlady also had, but the best available
was a Ford Consort.
However it didn't go to plan, the Ford Consort hadn't been returned for our
day of departure, a somewhat old Morris Minor, which needed some work first!
was offered, I believe my father was advised to go easy with it!
While packing our picnic table got stuck in the boot, add in a thunder
storm, so instead of leaving home from Brighton at 10am it was 2pm in
pouring rain, & flooded roads. Mother was crammed in the back due to all the
clobber, after going quite well the car then had a puncture, we did have a
spare but not a brace, and had to flag down a passing car to get help from a
local garage. So over 3 hours later arrived at The New Inn!
My parents bedroom was at the front, in the morning my mother had a shock
when she woke-up as outside the window was a double decker bus with people
able to look in. I understand she hid under the bedclothes.
After that, it was an enjoyable week, better than being at school, & I still
have the Picnic table to this day. |
