Ampthill Hotel

The Ampthill Hotel was situated at 72 Ampthill Road at the junction with Waterhouse Lane, closing in the 1990s. This pub has now been demolished.

I remember delivering letters there in 1989/90 and being struck by the lovely engraved glass advertising Scrase's Stout.  Driving around there about 3-5 years ago I noticed that the entire corner was occupied by a new development of houses/flats.  Tony Gallaher's Southampton's Inns and Taverns ( Poulner Publishing 1995) has this to say: 'Erected in 1925, this pub was one of the last to be built for Scrase's Star Brewery before Strong's of Romsey took over...It has been the property of the Whitbread Group since 1969'.

Stephen Tinsley 1963 This was the first pub I went to at the age of 5/6. I used to go to the Ampthill with my grandparents most weeks as my grandfather (a merchant navy man) was in the darts league.
