The Bassett Hotel was situated at 111 Burgess Road. This pub was present by 1871 when George Washington Jones was landlord of this old Cooper’s Brewery House. It was noted for its gardens and amusements , which included boxing matches. It was the first home of the world famous Concorde Club before its relocation to Stoneham Lane and hosted many of the top 1960s acts, including Manfred Mann who were regulars'. It became a Watney’s Brewery House when they acquired Cooper’s Brewery. In 1972 it was refurbished at a cost of £80,000 and relaunched as a Berni Steak House, it was then sold to Whitbread’s Brewery before finally closing in the 1990’s and being demolished and replaced by a care home.
