Bitterne Brewery

The Bitterne Brewery was situated at 128/130 West End Road. A 19th century pub of the same name stood here until 1952 when the current building replaced it. Prior to WWI the pub had its own brewery, hence the name, which was demolished in 1926. The publican, William Sly, was killed, and the pub badly damaged during a WWII air raid. His son Victor made temporary repairs and continued to trade. It closed in the 1990s when it became part of Greene King's Hungry Horse chain and renamed The Big Cheese. This restaurant closed in February 2017.
