Crown & Sceptre

The Crown & Sceptre at 168 Burgess Road. and very near the university, has closed and is boarded up, as is The Gate. The University has bought them and intends to demolish them as they 'spoil the look of the area'. I am not joking, see this article in the local paper: http://www.thisishampshire.net/news/8188522.Uni_to_demolish_pubs_for_landscaping/

A Scrase’s Star Brewery pub of the same name has stood on this site since the early 1870’s when a Richard Walters was landlord (see above photo). The present building was built by Strong’s Romsey Brewery in 1930 not long after they had taken over the old building, in 1969 it became a Whitbread’s Brewery pub after they acquired Strong’s. The pub closed in 2010 and suffered the same fate as its near neighbour The Gate, being demolished by Southampton University to enlarge its car park. As a goodwill gesture they mounted its foundation stone on a plinth in a small garden in the car park.
