The Lord Roberts was situated on Canal Walk. Closing in 2007, it was also known as The Strand and Bar Coda.
This pub has now been demolished.

This was, for a long time, certainly well into the 70s, a gay pub and was run by Mike and June Sexton. Frequented by ‘Sea Queens’.
Pete Smith (October 2012)
This pub was present by the 1850’ when a James Parkman was landlord. It was known as The United Flags until 1900 when it was renamed the Lord Roberts in honour of the famous Victorian soldier. Pantons Wareham Brewery leased the premises from December 1890 to 1892 when it was brought by the Scrases Star Brewery. During the period of ownership under Pantons there was a lot of trouble with the landlord, Eugene Goumez, who having 20 years experience as a landlord had a major falling out with the Brewery. He was replaced after the Chief Constable of Southampton in 1891 recommended that the pub’s licence should be withdrawn. Scrases Star Brewery sold it onto Welshs Hyde Abbey Brewery again being sold to Coopers Brewery in 1929 and finally Watneys before becoming a free house in 1986 and changing its name to The Strand. As The Lord Roberts it had become a notorious watering hole for both local queens and ones off of the liners that used to dock in the port. It closed in 2012 and was demolished to be replaced by a block of flats.

Used to use this around 1963/64 I recall there was a big stuffed bear at the door. We used to befriend the seamen off the cruise boats (Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and Union Castle line boats mostly) and give them information on where to go on for a good time in return for free drinks! I recall when the massive USS aircraft carrier docked with about 5,000 crew on board. That was a few days to remember in the Roberts and the Juniper Berry! Lock up your daughters!

Martin Roland 1965/1980 I remember June and Mike very well as a regular at their pub. We will all remember June with her mascara and long dark eye lashes. First started going there when I was in the merchant navy serving aboard RMS Queen Elizabeth. As a gay man it was a great place for meeting like minded people and had success on a number of occasions.
