This beer shop and small brewery
(nowadays called a micro brewery) was opened in 1851 with Alfred Ireland as
publican. Its address then was 14 Upper St Mary Street. It is thought that
the name comes from HMS North Star on which Mr Ireland served. The early
1900’s saw it owned by Welsh’s Hyde Abbey Brewery before being bought by
Cooper’s Brewery which in turn was taken over by Watneys. It suffered a
severe fire in October 1989 and was boarded up until 1991 when it reopened
again, however did last long as it closed and was demolished to make way for
housing between 2000 and 2004. |
