In the 1870s Charles Swanson was landlord of this fully
licensed Scrases Star brewery pub, which was later bought by Strongs Romsey
brewery. In 1969 Whitbreads brewery took over when they purchased Strongs.
The pub was nearly destroyed in 1941 when a Heinkel 111 bomber crashed into
the house opposite causing the pub to be badly damaged and having to be
propped up for many years after the war. It changed names to The Gatehouse
before closing in 2008. Now converted into flats. |

My grandfather
Henry James Dowse was licensee’til November 1892 not sure when he took it
over, but in 1893 he moved to The Cricketer’s Arms in Bedford Place. In 1895
at the age of 40 he married and my mother was born in 1896! He moved on to
The Cowherds Inn on the common around 1904 and stayed until the military
took over at the beginning of WW1. |
