The Royal Standard was situated on on the corner of Commercial Road and Wyndham Place. It was known as the Show Business Pub because of its main clientele being from the Entertainment World. The Artistes from any Play, Musical, Rock Group or individual Singing Act produced at the “Gaumont (British) Theatre” as it was known in the 1960’s and now called The Mayflower Theatre, would use it to wind down. A very nice Pub in its day, I and other fellow employees of the Provident Cheque Company in Shirley had our Xmas Staff evening party there in the early 1960’s, had a great time! Would love to know what happened to all the Artiste’s Photo’s and Momento’s when Royal Anchor finally closed, does the Brewery or the last Landlords family still have some or all of them?
