The
Sailors Return
was situated on Millbrook Road. This pub has now been demolished. |
|
The Sailors Return was an old pub rebuilt in the late 1800s Originally it
was on the foreshore, before the railway was opened in 1847. My father Ivor
Jarvis was Landlord from 1964 to 1978. The original orientation was the
other way around, facing away from the water. I believe it was rebuilt in
about 1890 with 3 seperate rooms facing the then new
Millbrook Road. The extensive cellar was an indecation of the original
footprint. At some time the front rooms were consolidated into one room and
a large lounge added to the rear, with an off sales in between accessed by a
passage way between the pub 309 and next door 305, there being no 307 as it
was demolished due to bomb damage during WW2. I was told by an elderly man
who had used the pub for many years that it was originally a home brew
pub, and was later owned by a couple of local brewers before ending up with
Wm Coopers and subsequently Watneys. The beer wqs supplied from Alton (
former Crowleys Brewery ) after brewing ceased at the former Coopers
Brewery..The pub sign is in the possession of a member of my family and is
on dislpay in her conservetory. |

I used this pub regularly, lunchtime and evening whilst
working for Michele Lynn costume jewellery opposite. It evokes great
memories of my youth. I drank bottles of Strong Pale Ale. There was a
bar with a pool table and a lively lounge with music |
