This pub was at the foot of the Northam Bridge, the opposite side of the
road to the old Meridian studios and directly opposite Southampton 'Coalporter's'
amateur rowing club. It is visible from the city bound side of the 3024
Northam road. King Sturge has this for let at the moment.
This inn dates from the 1830's. Around the 1880's, it was owned by
Barlow's Victoria Brewery of Titchfield and later by Brickwood's Brewery
and after refurbishment in 1971 by Whitbread. William George Forder is
listed in directories as landlord between 1903 and 1951, and followed by
Mrs. A.L. Forder. Old photo's show a chimney behind the pub which is
probably of the linseed mills and artificial manure works.
In 1864 the pub was the scene of a gruesome accident when four people died
in a boating accident and their bodies were laid out side by side in a
room at the Inn. In happier times I drank in the pub in the early 70's
before doing a disco in the 'Coalporter's'. I seem to remember it had a
good seafood menu.
