This pub had the atmosphere of a bus station waiting room.
You could get to it from an alley way to the side of the Echo building which
was demolished
along with two large office blocks (Arundel Towers) and Pirelli Cable Works,
when building work began in 1997 on the West Quay centre . The centre was
opened on 28 September 2000. |

This 1850s fully
licensed pub was previously known as The Spa Road Tavern and owned by the
Aldridge’s Bedford brewery until being taken over by Cooper’s Brewery in the
early 20th century. It later became a Watney’s Brewery pub and finally a
Chef & Brewer Bar. It underwent a major extension and refurbishment in 1963,
with a garden patio being added, overlooking Portland Terrace. The pub
closed and was demolished along with its neighbour The Wig & Pen in the mid
1990s to allow the development of the West Quay Shopping Complex. |
