The Sportsman was built before the Second World War , & was used by the home guard during the war , Brickwoods took it over to my knowledge in early fifties , as my parents became the first Landlord &Landlady Mr& Mrs NA Burden in 1952 , where we remained till 1963. There were several bars in the establishment , the Public bar , Lounge , Private ( snug) Off-licence Garden Bar & Childrens room , where sweet cockles & hot dogs were served during the summer months , my mother was also one of the first Landlady's that started serving food in the lounge bar.
We also had a well stocked garden for children's amusement , I can recall on one summers evening seeing a full Carpark several coaches & two double decker buses , fortunately in those days we had a staff of sixteen barmaids & men serving behind the bar.
