Washington Inn

The Washington Inn was situated at 31
Lower Canal Walk. Built in the 1930s on the site of an older pub, this pub
closed on 10 January 1973 and became the ofiice of the local stevedores
union. The original pub on this site was known as the Washington Hotel Tap,
being the tap bar for the Washington Hotel in nearby Orchard Place, and
dated back to the 1850s when Fred Wardell was the licensee. The 1878 Drink
Map shows a fully licensed house on this site. Scrase’s Star Brewery owned
the pub in the early years of the 20th century, it became the property of
Strong’s Romsey Brewery in the 1920s, and was taken over by the Whitbread
Group in 1969. The site is now a car park. |
