The Volunteer was situated at Queen Street and
is now used as a private house. |

Today there's a private house at the end of the street called - what else? -
The Volunteer. It has lovely worn and stained floorboards, consistent with
its one-time status as a pub. A reliable informant - who hung around
outside at the time (it attracted local hippies) - said it was closed around
1968-69, after a drugs-bust. Anecdotally, the police had a hand in its
closure. |

I am sure that I had a few beers in the Volunteer Twyford on
a couple of occasions in late 1971/early 1972; this time is about right as I
only got my driving licence in October 1971. There were regular police raids
for drugs etc, one resulted in it being closed down permanently.
