Sussex Arms

The Sussex Arms was situated on Sussex Street. This pub closed in 1960 and was subsequently demolished. It was previously known as The Sussex Tavern.

My late father, Jack Cawdrey, was born in the Sussex Arms where he lived with parents Charles (a tailor), and Nellie (nee Padwick, who was a court dressmaker). He was born on 5th May 1918. Dad always attributed his love of trains and model trains, to his Mother holding him up to a window in the Sussex Arms where he could see and hear trains. He reckoned the sound of trains whistles was probably the 1st noise he heard and took mental note of.
His father (Charles), ran the pub back in those times for his brother who was the registered publican but unable to run it himself due to poor health. Charlie as he was called, served in the army. I forget offhand the name of his regiment, but there is a statue just outside Winchester Cathedral commemorating them. When Jack was very young, they moved from the Sussex to the Bakers Arms where they stayed until Dad was about 14. I know more about his time at the Bakers, and a few years ago was offered a tour of the living quarters which incidentally, had barely changed. So much so that my Dad, then living in Australia, was able to tell me from my photos, which each room was! He was then about 98. (Incidentally, Dad lived to be 100 and got his card from the Queen.)
In 1932 they moved to 6 St Swithun St. The shoe scraper is still there beside the front door as is the original attic window.
In 6 wks time (June 2025), I will again visit from Bribie Island in Queensland, to walk in dear Dad's footsteps. He so loved Winchester...the water meadows and Cathedral. St Catherine's Hill where he flew his balsa wood kit aeroplanes on outings with his parents.
