The White Horse was situated on Broad Lane. The original White Horse was on The Street until c1930. It was destroyed by fire in 1982.
 
In another form, the standard of the ancient Saxons; hence the emblem of Kent. A white horse galloping is the device of the House of Hanover and it is said many a "Royal (Stuart) Oak" became "White Horse" practically overnight in the 18th century, when the coming of a new dynasty suggested the inn should emulate the Vicar of Bray.
