Rose Inn

The Rose Inn was situated at 119 Victoria Street.

My grandfather Richard King was the landlord of the Rose Inn, Victoria Street Gillingham from sometime before the Second World War until his death in 1951, his wife, Mary and son Charlie then ran the pub until the mid 1960s. Richard King’s father had a history of being publican in Gravesend including the Rose of Denmark, The Crown and The Dickens.
My memories of The Rose Inn were that it had 3 bars, public, saloon and private with a small function room at the rear. Upstairs were used for lodge meetings. The was also a ‘Jug and Bottle’ for carry out sales. During my visits there I remember the 2 corgi dogs that my grandmother and uncle had, Vicky and Betty and Polly the Parrot (who was actually a cockatoo). I also have a photo of me in the bar during the Queens coronation.
