I moved into 56 Valley Drive in 1951
and I was about 5 and a half. went to Westcourt School then Southfields The
Admiral Beatty was a wooden building with a black stain or paint outside
construction, and there were no shops in that parade that's there now. Just
out of intrest there were 3 Dustbins near where the Chemist is and they
where for waste food or Pig Bins for the farmer. (Not allowed now) the land
behind the even numbered houses from 2 to the pub was what we now call a
market garden, and the owner had a big Van with a door in the back selling
all his Veg. River View Park had not been built and from the front upstairs
bay window you could see the control tower of the airport. and from just
past the shops Valley drive was an unadopted road to the 3 lane A2. yes 3
lanes 1 each way and the suicide lane in the middle for overtaking. God this
has brought back some old memories. I now live north of manchester and my
other 2 brothers live in Devon and near Wigan. |
