From October 16 to
October 19, 1612, the Elector Palatine Frederic V. from Heidelberg (Germany)
stayed in “The Ship” where the Master of Ceremony, Sir Lewes Lewknor, had
booked him. Frederic had arrived from the Netherlands by ship at Gravesend
on his way to London, to marry Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of King James I.
The 16 year old German Duke was visited at the SHIP by the Earl of Carlisle
(October 17, 1612) and the Duke of Lennox (October 18. 1612) to bring
welcome and greetings from His Royal Highness James I. The marriage had a
political purpose: to form a strong alliance against Catholic Spain – since
Frederic was the leader of the Protestant Union in Europe. |
