The
Town Arms was situated at 23 Queen Street. Originally known as The Pippin
Tree from 1705 to 1724, this pub is now used as Blakes Bar. |
|
In 1876 the great English chessplayer Joseph Henry Blackburne gave a
blindfold display in this pub. He won 7 drew 1 lost 0 without sight of the
board. The Gravesend Chess Club - which now meets Thursdays at 8 in The
Windmill Tavern was founded the same night. |
