The Harrow was situated at the
junction of Tonbridge Road and Cemetery Lane. This was a Courage pub and
originally had 3 rooms. A Public Bar, a Jug & Bottle and a Saloon Bar. In
the 1970s it was famous for its steaks. The food was cooked by the Landlord
Chris and front of house was run by his wife Lynn. The dart board and bar
billiards were a popular attractions in the public bar.
When I was 14 I worked at the pub on Sunday mornings doing the cleaning.
Vacuuming, mopping and polishing were the order of the day. The cellar was a
ground level room behind the bars. Apart from the beer, other supplies were
kept in there too. I remember being caught with a mouthful of maraschino
cherries one day. Nothing was said but I was truly embarrassed. I also
remember being introduced to beer at the Harrow. I was allowed to have half
a pint of Courage Best Bitter before opening time. I nearly always had it
with a tube of Smarties at the time because I wasn’t fully used to the
taste. |
