Roman Galley

The Roman Galley was situated on the Thanet Way at Herne Bay in Kent. The pub closed in about 2005 and has now been converted to luxury apartments. Fans of Only Fools and Horses will recognise this as the "Halfway House" pub where the jolly boys stopped off for a pitstop whilst on their beano to Margate in their 1989 Christmas special.

I remember many a beano to Margate. In those days Coaches had to be out of Margate by 6pm “I think” and the Galley was a late drink on the way home. You had to stop off on the way to Margate and book your coach in for the return journey. Pulled a few birds back in the day. Great memories.

Well recall a time back in the 80'S we stopped at this boozer on the way back to south London after a Margate beano, of course everybody in the place was already heavily inebriated, and for some reason or other it all kicked off big time, it was like one of those wild west bar fights where everyone was getting involved, even when old Bill turned up it didn't stop, in the end the law called a halt and we were all ordered back on our coaches and told to go, we ended up in the Dutch House on the Sidcup bypass, (also long gone), where bizarrely, they said we couldn't come as we had jeans on, so we all took our jeans off and stood at the bar in our under crackers, and days.

Martin Humphreys 1981 Staff on Saturday and Sundays when the Beanos came past on the way to and on the way back from Margate.
I remember the discos in the barn out the back and the huge amount of alcohol that was drunk by the customers. A lot of half full glasses went back on the coach at chucking out time.
John Walker 1970s I was booked on numerous weekends to run my mobile disco at the Roman Galley. Entertaining 'beano' runs to Margate mainly.
