Anchor & Hope

The Anchor & Hope was situated on Bower Lane (previously Bower Place). This pub closed in September 2011 and is to be redeveloped as terraced housing. The Anchor & Hope had a long association with fishing and boating on the river Medway which lay just down the hill on the left of the photograph. It was the headquarters of The Maidstone Angling Society in the 1880's at the time of proprietor Edward Avery. Boats of every type were let for hire by the pub in those days.
