The Dog & Gun was situated on Boxley Road. This pub closed in July 2019.

Some forty years ago this pub was a frequent meeting place for the local CAMRA branch. The landlord at the time was a member of the chart topping group, Chicory Tip, a local group who had a No.1 hit with ‘Son of your Father’. A gold disc was displayed in the bar. A while later, a change of landlord and the dimly lit bar was stripped of it’s heavy maroon curtains and dark wallpaper, and brightened up. It was not the same. I return in June this year for a farewell drink one Sunday afternoon and to listen to a tribute band, the Relics. Now being converted into flats.

Barry Mayger was the local lad who achieved fame as one of the founders of the group Chicory Tip, the only group from Maidstone to get to the very top. (#1 UK hit in 1972, Son off My Father, the first hit to feature a Moog synthesiser). Barry ran it for many years, but eventually moved to Portugal, where he died in January 2020.

My grandparents Ron & Wyn Yates ran this pub in the sixties. The local Buffaloes used to meet in the upstairs meeting room complete with a hatch in the door & buffalo horns hanging on the wall.

Ian McIver 1986/1988 Myself, Andy, Billy, Jane & Kay lived 4 doors down at 195. We still see each other and have very fond memories. Kay/Barry landlords and Shane the Alsatian dog. We returned a few years ago for a reunion. So disappointed that it was one open area rather than the 2 bars as we remembered. My mate Lofty was also hanging around
