I remember the Lang's Arms from what
must have been its final few months. It was in the street opposite what was
once Accrington Grammar School. The school building is now long demolished.
That is a shame. It would have made superb loft apartments.
I was a sixteen years old lad, at the time, and myself and other lads from
the College of Further Education, formerly Grammar School, would go into the
Lang's on the occasional lunchtime. It was illegal, of course, but the
landlord didn't seem to mind (he must have known).
Mild was two shillings (two Bob) a pint. Bitter was two shillings and
tuppence (two an' two).
One of the regulars tried to get me into a drinking competition. He offered
me a ten pints start. The one who was still standing at the end, or who
hadn't thrown up, was supposed to pay for all the beer. I declined.
I didn't know why we stopped going in the Lang's Arms. I've no recollection
of it closing down. |
