The Astley Arms was situated at 15 Chester
Square.
In 1881 a cousin of mine, Ralph Ogden, was the "Innkeeper" here, and in
1891, after he died, his widow Catherine was the innkeeper, with her son
Henry (Harry) being the hotel manager. At that time, in 1891, other sons
and daughters lived with her at the hotel, John, was a butcher, and the
other children, Ralph 18 was a chemist assistant, Samuel (Sam) 17 was a
barman in the hotel, William (Willie) 15, was a barman, and Edward 7 was a
scholar, with two daughters Hannah 4 and Jane living with their mother at
the hotel. They also employed Alice Feltham in the hotel, probably as a
housemaid. it appears to have ceased to exist at some time after the death
of Catherine in 1903, and no information could be found about the hotel
after the 1891 England census. |
