The Pointsman was situated on Whitelands Road.

Strictly speaking only half of the pub was in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, the other half of the pub was in Stalybridge, Cheshire. The Lounge of the pub was in one county, the Tap Room of the pub was in the other county. The Licensing Hours in both counties were slightly different. So at 10.30 pm if you were in the Stalybridge, Cheshire, room you had to move, and go and sit in the other, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, room where the Closing Time was 11.00pm. Otherwise both the Landlord and the Customer could be done for drinking out of hours.
